Most of us don’t think much about our water heater unless it breaks down. Whether your water heater has broken down, or it’s showing signs that it’s time to replace it. Whatever the case, before you run down to the local home center and buy one off the shelf, explore all your options. Remember, your water heater is one of those appliances that will last ten to fifteen years, so why not buy the one you want without regrets?

Below are some of the questions you’ll want to answer before purchasing:

  • What type of heater do I want, a storage tank heater or a tankless on-demand heater?
  • What size heater do I need for my home?
  • Does my new heater have the EnergyStar Label for energy savings and performance?
  • Is my new water heater eligible for a rebate?
  • What type of power will my heater use, natural gas, electricity, propane, or solar energy?
  • What type of new technology do the latest water heaters have?

Bradford White Hydrojet® Total Performance System

While tankless heaters have been on the market for many years, there has never been more of a buzz surrounding them until now. The latest tank-style heaters have seen a technological explosion over the last few years. Big B’s Plumbing promotes Bradford White Water Heaters for many reasons. Some of the latest technologies surrounding Bradford White include Hydrojet® technology. The Bradford White Hydrojet® Total Performance System delivers cold water through a tube that eliminates sediment that accumulates in your water heater. In addition, the counter-rotation creates dynamic turbulence from a series of “jet ports” that efficiently prevents mineral deposits from building up.

Water heaters are most often rendered inoperable by sediment accumulation over years of use. As a result of Bradford White’s Hydrojet® water heater, sediment reduction technology will have your water heater lasting longer. In addition, it will produce more hot water for less money and increase overall operational efficiency while providing hot water quicker than other models.

Vitraglas® Tank Lining

Other features include Vitraglas® Tank Lining that delivers unmatched protection from the extremely corrosive impacts of hot water. It will also protect the tank’s steel and other components from hazardous and corrosive substances.

Choosing The Right Water Heater You Need To Order

If you choose to stay with the more traditional model, such as a storage tank heater, then you’ll want to know storage capacity. For the storage capacity, you’ll want to take the number of bathrooms, bedrooms, and the number of people in your household into consideration. Furthermore, you’ll want to consider your jacuzzi tub, that’s usually in the master bedroom. Most jacuzzi tubs are 70 gallons, but they usually have a heater of their own.

A 30-gallon heater is for a household for two or less.

A 40-gallon heater is for a household for two-four persons.

A 50-gallon heater is for a household of three or five persons.

A 60-gallon heater is for a household of six or more.

Upgrading From 40 Gallons To 50 Gallons Is A Minor Expense

Consider this when purchasing your water heater. In most cases, upgrading to a larger tank capacity is usually a minor cost. Ask your Big B’s Plumbing expert what the cost of upgrading to a larger tank would cost. It might surprise you.

If you decide to upgrade to a tankless water heater, you’re going to need to know how much hot water you’ll need at any given time. Use your plumbing professional to help you calculate the proper flow rate for your home’s water usage.

What Type Of Fuel Does Your Water Heater Use?

You’ll need to know what type of fuel your water heater will use, whether that’s natural gas, electric, solar, or propane. Most homes are already pre-plumbed with the kind of unit you’ll need. Generally, rural areas are plumbed for propane, while residential neighborhoods get plumbed for natural gas or electricity. Storage tank heaters do require some minor maintenance if you want to extend the life of your heater. Your heater is continuously full of standing water, which includes calcium and minerals, creating sediment in the tank’s bottom. Draining your tank twice a year is recommended.

Energy.gov Is A Great website for information
