Sewer line problems are unpredictable. They can pop up when you least expect it. Some give fair warning by slow-moving drains, while other sewer line problems give no warning at all. Not long ago, I was clearing around a tree close to the street in my front yard, and my neighbor came out. He began to tell me about a tree planted by the builder over 20 years ago next to the street. Most planned communities have trees planted by the builders, but you cannot remove them without permission from the homeowners association (HOA) approval.

HOA Can Be Difficult To Deal With

In my neighbor’s case, the roots had penetrated the sewer line. He said that the drains backed up, and they experienced some minor flooding, not to mention a significant inconvenience. The compromised portion of the sewer line was the responsibility of the city. He said the city was excellent in dealing with the problem, but the homeowners association was a nightmare. They just wouldn’t approve the removal of the tree. Through lengthy contentious conversations with the HOA, they finally decided it was best to remove the tree.

Sewer Line Problems Are Not Uncommon In Older Homes

The one thing most sewer line problems have in common is that they usually occur in older homes 20 years or older. In most cases, you’ll begin to see your drains slowly draining throughout the home. When your drains move slowly in one drain, such as a bathtub, sink, or toilet, then the problem is isolated to that one drain. For slow-moving drains throughout the house, your technician will first attempt to clear your sewer line using a plumbers snake. They’ll usually enter the drain from the home’s cleanout. If they cannot clear the drainpipe using a plumbers snake or the clog returns a month or two later, then your plumber must take other measures to clear the clog for good.

Diagnosis The Problem And Determine The Best Approach

A camera inspection of the line will precisely diagnose the problem to determine the best approach. For returning clogs, Hydro-jetting your pipes is usually the best solution. The truck-mounted hydro jetter is the most powerful drain cleaning equipment in the industry, equipped with a high-pressure hose and sophisticated nozzle. The Hydro jetting machine can produce 3,500 psi with water flow estimated at 2-25 gallons of water per minute. It is capable of clearing everything in its path, including tree roots, hard water mineral buildup, grease, and sludge.

While this procedure is along the same lines as drain cleaning, it’s not recommended for the do-it-yourselfer and should only be completed by a plumbing professional.

Trenchless Sewer lines Are The Best Solution

After the camera inspection is complete and you find that the sewer line is cracked or broken, or tree roots have entered the line, then a trenchless sewer line, aka cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP), might be the best solution. If tree roots have compromised your pipes, the problem will reoccur over time unless the source of the problem gets removed or the pipe’s compromised area gets repaired. A trenchless sewer line is an excellent solution for a cracked or broken sewer line. It’s a slightly invasive way of installing a sewer line without compromising your landscape.

It Creates A Pipe Within A Pipe That Will Last 50 Years Or Longer

Inserted down your sewer pipe is a flexible felt pipeliner wrapped around a bladder and coated with epoxy resin, then inflated. This procedure is also called “cured-in-place-pipe.” Once the pipe and the resin hardens, it creates a pipe within a pipe; you can expect your CIPP to last 50 years or longer. The resin cures in approximately 2-3 hours. The bladder is deflated, removed, and ready for inspection. The family is back home the same day.
